When the News is Good

Dear Mr. Kelly,

This message should have gone out yesterday, and would have, too, had I not forgotten to write it. My excuse is that I was largely caught up in good news. It seemed to start with the Pope's visit to America, and it hasn't stopped. You may enjoy my latest blog entry: Telling the Good News.

More good news is highlighted in yesterday's Forum piece by Phil Lawler on Trinity's Catholic World News site. It seems that the reception of communion at the US papal Masses by pro-abortion politicians did not go completely unrebuked, at least not in New York: Cardinal Egan's Rebuke to Giuliani: Important Subtleties.

It is also good news that This Rock magazine, published by the outstanding apologetics apostolate
Catholic Answers, just continues to get better--so much so that we have trouble not clipping too many of its articles. If you don't subscribe, I recommend you correct that oversight at the magazine's web page. Meanwhile, here's another great article, refuting Determinism: Determined to Deny Your Freedom.

As you know, we follow the Pope's addresses and writings very carefully at CatholicCulture.org because they embody so much of the Good News. But who else at the Vatican is worth quoting? The Secretary of State, currently Tarcisio Cardinal Bertone, is essentially the second in command in Rome, often appearing at special events the Pope cannot attend. Here are two samples of Cardinal Bertone's recent wisdom:

Culture and the Fundamental Ethics of Human Life: A February 2008 address at the University of Havana, Cuba, on the anniversary of the death of the Servant of God Felix Varela.

Into Every Life . . .

Not all the news is good, of course. You may be interested in my take on Paraguay's recent election of a Catholic bishop as President, despite the insistence of the Holy See that he withdraw from the race: Bishop Fernando Lugo Mendez, President of Paraguay.

Jeff Mirus
President
Trinity Communications
