<DIV><FONT face=Arial size=2>Pinetown metro police are investigating an abortion
clinic suspected of being responsible for a drain blockage after a foetus was
found in the drain on Friday.</FONT></DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV><FONT face=Arial size=2>Metro Superintendent Joyce Khuzwayo said yesterday
that a cleaner was called to unblock the drain and found that a foetus had
caused the blockage.</FONT></DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV><FONT face=Arial size=2>She said the blocked drains were in Hill Street in
the Pinetown CBD.</FONT></DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV><FONT face=Arial size=2>"The matter has been forwarded to the SAPS for
investigations and an inquest docket has been opened.</FONT></DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV><FONT face=Arial size=2>"At this stage, we suspect that the foetus was
flushed down the drain by the abortion clinic in one of the buildings in Hill
Street."</FONT></DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV><FONT face=Arial size=2>We will be investigating one of the abortion
clinics in the area, said Khuzwayo.</FONT></DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV><FONT face=Arial size=2>She said police were not sure whether the clinic
was legal or not and added that this was the third time that a drain had been
blocked because of the flushing away of a foetus.</FONT></DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV><FONT face=Arial size=2>"It happened at least three times last week," she
said.</FONT></DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV><FONT face=Arial size=2>Pinetown SAPS Inspector Solomon Mbele said that
while police were not aware of this, another foetus was found near Westmead on
Wednesday last week.</FONT></DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV><FONT face=Arial size=2>Khuzwayo said the number of illegal abortion
clinics in Durban had decreased after a metro police operation in the
city.</FONT></DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV><FONT face=Arial size=2>It had been reported that there were many illegal
abortion clinics operating, and some of them had moved to Pinetown and
Isipingo.</FONT></DIV></BODY></HTML>
