<P><EM>Dear Miss Dawson,</EM></P>I've been saying it for the past several years now: The Church in America is getting healthier, and the <STRONG>episcopate is becoming more Catholic</STRONG>.
<P>After decades of lay criticism, the episcopate is considering what to do about the notorious US <STRONG>Catholic Campaign for Human Development</STRONG>. <P>If you're having any trouble at all putting this in perspective, then Phil Lawler's latest <EM>In Depth Analysis</EM> is a must: <A href="http://www.catholicculture.org/commentary/articles.cfm?id=459" rel=nofollow target=_blank>The time is now for reform of the CCHD</A>. This article is just what you've come to expect from <A href="http://catholicculture.org/" target=_blank>CatholicCulture.org</A>: Clear, accurate, feasible and <STRONG>outside the American secular box</STRONG>.
<P>Another brilliant contribution to what it ought to mean to be Catholic is <STRONG>Archbishop Charles Chaput</STRONG>'s challenging address earlier this week on <A href="http://www.catholicculture.org/culture/library/view.cfm?recnum=9385" rel=nofollow target=_blank>Living within the Truth: Religious Liberty and Catholic Mission in the New Order of the World</A>.
<P>To follow Chaput's lead in fighting secularism effectively, one thing we must do is <STRONG>counter the distortion</STRONG> of so much of the news by the secular media. Consider Diogenes' report on the treatment of the scientists who precipitated the recent court restriction of embryonic stem cell research: <A href="http://www.catholicculture.org/commentary/otr.cfm?id=5368" rel=nofollow target=_blank>Whatever you do, don't mention the science</A>.
<P>We also have to combat the tendency of secular culture to seek a moral high ground in the bureaucratic <STRONG>pursuit of the trivial</STRONG>. I have a little story for you about that: <A href="http://www.catholicculture.org/commentary/otc.cfm?id=690" rel=nofollow target=_blank>A man walks into a bar...</A>.
<P>I want to remind you again that <A href="http://www.catholicculture.org/culture/liturgicalyear/calendar/day.cfm?date=2010-08-28" rel=nofollow target=_blank>St. Augustine's Feast</A> is tomorrow. His writings become more relevant by the day, as our culture secularizes. But I'm also increasingly excited about <STRONG>John Henry Cardinal Newman's</STRONG> upcoming beatification on September 19th. Reports have just announced that his feast day will be <A href="http://www.catholicculture.org/news/headlines/index.cfm?storyid=7354" rel=nofollow target=_blank>October 9th</A>.
<P><STRONG>Astonishingly</STRONG>, our shortfall of nearly $10,000 has been slashed to $3,500 in the past 24 hours by 43 extremely generous supporters. We have five days to go to raise the rest. As we get closer to breaking even, <A href="https://www.catholicculture.org/users/register.cfm?shid=donate" rel=nofollow target=_blank>every gift</A> matters—no matter how small.
