Long ago, Nostradamus foresaw that on Jan 30, Dianne Dawson would write:<br><br>> First, Wycliffe and SIL have produced Stories of the Prophets, an Arabic<br>> Bible that uses an Arabic equivalent of ?Lord? instead of ?Father? and<br>> ?Messiah? instead of ?Son.?<br>> Second, Frontiers and SIL have produced Meaning of the Gospel of<br>> Christ , an Arabic translation which removes ?Father? in reference<br>> to God and replaces it with ?Allah,? and removes or redefines ?Son.?<br><br>This example is clearly politcal correctness at work, but keep in mind that<br>"dynamic translation" is a valid concept. In a less controversial example, the Hide language which my sister worked on translating<br>has different grammar depending on whether the speaker is above, below,<br>or on the same level as the audience. (The Hide live in a mountainous region,<br>where this is
important.)<br><br>Thus when Jesus gives the Sermon on the Mount, you have to decide whether<br>Jesus sat/stood above his audience on the mountain, or below and talked<br>up to them, or in the middle with people both above and below. (In<br>my imagination, he sits above - but that is not explicitly mentioned.)<br><br>In Spanish, precise family relationships are important - which is great<br>fun when translating passages about Jesus' "brothers".<br><br>--<br> Stuart D.
