Visions of the Kingdom: Week 28
Edom, Moab, Ammon, and Phillistia kick Judah when she is down.
For this, they are judged. But while the Phillistines leave the world stage,
the relatives of Israel are still kicking when Ceasar Agustus battles
Mark Anthony and Cleopatra. Just like today, the mightiest military
force on earth is unable to subdue the tiny Middle Eastern nations at
reasonable cost.
Daniel 11:41
Since God was judging Judah, the other nations should not expect to
escape judgement.
"For it is time for judgment to begin at the household of God; and if it begins
with us, what will be the outcome for those who do not obey the gospel of God?"
1 Peter 4:17
- 25:3 "Aha!" - they not only rejoiced over Judah's judgement,
but were quick to grab the abandoned property.
Jeremiah 49
- 25:4 "sons of the East" - sons of Abraham which he sent east to
leave Caanan for Isaac.
Genesis 25
- 25:5
“The fulfilment of this prediction is not noted in Scripture: but
Josephus tells us, that about five years after the taking of Jerusalem,
Nebuchadnezzar turned his arms against the Ammonites and Moabites, and
afterwards against Egypt; and having subdued those nations, he returned
to Babylon. Josephus Antiquities, l. x., c. ii.” (Adam Clarke, 1827)
I was unable to find this reference in Josephus, and gave up for
tonight. Charles Lee Feinberg says the same in
"The Prophesy of Ezekiel" (Moody Press 1969), so maybe it's true.
- 25:7 "plunder to the nations" - As they grabbed Judah's land, others
will grab their land when Nebuchadnezzar gets to them. "But,
afterward God will restore them from captivity."
Jeremiah 49:6
- 25:8 "Judah is like all the other nations" - they were certainly
*acting* like other nations. But because of their jeering,
Moab is judged along with Ammon.
- 25:12 "Edom acted vengefully" -
Psalms 137:7
Obadiah
Lamentations 4:21-22
- 25:14 "By the hand of my people Israel"
“This was fulfilled by the Maccabees, who not only defeated them and
brought them under complete subjection, but obliged them to receive
circumcision, Joseph. Antiquities l. xiii., c. 17;
1 Maccabees 5:65;
2 Maccabees 10:16.” (Adam Clarke, 1827)
- 25:16 "cut off the Cherethites" - "Cherethite" means "cutter off"
or "executioner". God makes puns while pronouncing judgement.
The Cherethites were also hired mercenaries under King David.
2 Samuel 15:18
- 25:17 "great vengeance" - because they had taken vengeance on Judah,
Nebuchadnezzar would take vengeance on them.
“Nebuchadnezzar punished them because they had assisted the Tyrians
during the time he was besieging their city.” (Adam Clarke, 1827)
