Visions of the Kingdom: Week 33
- 30:1 This belongs between the 10th year and 11th year (verse 20) dated
prophecies. The 27th year was an update inserted for the 10th year
prophecy.
- 30:3 "day of the LORD" - as there are many anti-christs before
the antichrist, so there are many national days of the LORD,
when the cup of their iniquity is full, and which are a pattern of the
final date of the LORD for the whole world.
"day of clouds" - storm clouds portending the coming destruction
“Some two years, and you shall be miserably routed in the deserts of
Libya; immediately after the civil war for eleven years together
shall waste you; and then Nebuchadrezzar’s forces will be upon you;
so that, whereas there may be about sixteen or eighteen years between
the prophecy and its fulfilling, here is thirteen or fourteen of them
taken up with sorrows and afflictions, forerunners of the last.”
(Matthew Poole)
- 30:5 "mingled peoples" - Egypt was an ancient "melting pot"
- 30:8 "set fire to Egypt" - war is like a fire that consumes people
- 30:9 "messengers from Me" - Nebuchadnezzar travelled up the Nile
by ship to devastate the complacent Ethiopia as well
- 30:13 "I will destroy the idols" - thus begins another prophecy
fulfilled by Cambyses of Persia, successor to Cyrus the Great (who sent
the Egyptians back to their land).
- 30:15 "wrath on Pelusium" - Herodotus writes that Cambyses took Pelusium
by setting dogs and cats before his army, which the Egyptians
held sacred and would not attack.
- 30:18 "daughters into captivity" - it was common for the nations to take
women as spoils of war. But Moses laid severe restrictions on the
practice.
Deuteronomy 21:10-14
- 30:20 "11th year" - the 27th year was an update to the prophecy
of the 10th year from last time.
- 20:21 "broken the arm" - a flexed arm was the Egyptian symbol of strength.
- 20:22 "one that was broken" - likely referring to Nebuchadnezzar's defeat
of Egypt when they tried to break the seige of Jerusalem.
Jeremiah 37:5
