Visions of the Kingdom: Week 9
- 7:14 "no one goes to war" - their army is too weak to fight,
whether from famine, or going woke.
"wrath on the whole multitude" - everyone will suffer, even those
not participating in the wickedness.
“The price of apathy towards public affairs is to be ruled by evil men.”
    ― Plato
- 7:15 "sword is outside, famine and plague within" - there is no place
to run to, not the country, not the cities.
- 7:16 "live in the mountains" - all the cities and country house were
confiscated or destroyed. Nebuchadnezzar left the poor in the
land, but they left for Egypt - in direct disobedience yet again.
- 7:17 "knees turn to water" - literally "knees run with water", a reference
to loss of bladder control caused by anxiety and fear.
- 7:19 "silver in the streets" - money cannot save them.
"or fill their stomachs" - you can't eat gold. (Today you could
make it into bullets.)
"the stumbling block" - in fact, money was the snare.
- 7:20 "vile images ... unclean for them" - their wealth was used
for perversion (abominations) and torture of their own children.
Now it will be detestable for them, and plunder for the invaders.
- 7:22 "defile my secret place" - even the holy of holies will
be plundered by the Chaldeans.
- 7:23 "forge the chain" - chain binding a prisoner.
Jeremiah 39:7
"crimes of blood" - literally, judicial murder. Wicked judges
were taking the lives and livelihoods of the innocent. Now
the survivors will go in chains to Babylon.
- 7:24 "take possession of their houses" - they had been grabbing
houses and land from the poor, and now the invaders would
seize all their fine dwellings.
- 7:25 "seek peace but not find it" - Nebuchadnezzar has had it with
their treaty breaking. He is not interested in another treaty.
- 7:26 "then they will seek a vision from a prophet" -
They had refused to listen for centuries.
God is not interested in providing another Word from the LORD.
- 7:27 "then they will know that I am the LORD" - *finally*, God has
gotten their attention.
