The Sermon at the Gate

It is unclear whether this is the same sermon given in chapter 26 under Jehoiakim son of Josiah, or an earlier version. I lean toward an earlier version given under Josiah. Throughout Jeremiah’s ministry, everything is repeated many times hoping that some will listen.

  • 7:3 “I will let you live” - James 4:15

  • 7:4 “the temple of the Lord” - God delivered them from Assyria when Hezekiah led the people to entreat the Lord. Now, they refuse to repent in truth, and take God’s protection for granted.

  • 7:5 “really correct your ways” -

    • honest courts
    • justice for the poor (no debt inflation, honor Sabbath year)
    • no judicial murder
    • no idolatry
  • 7:8 “trust in lying words” - the people love the fake news

  • 7:9 Societal sins:

    • theft (scams)
    • murder (stoning the innocent)
    • adultery (porn and prostitution)
    • perjury (false witness)
    • Baal worship
  • 7:10 No, God will not enable their abominations by delivering them.

  • 7:11 “den of robbers” - Quoted by Jesus. After going out to commit their crimes against God and man, they return to the temple expecting it to be a refuge, like the den of a gang of robbers. Matthew 21:13

  • 7:12 “Shiloh” - in 1 Samuel 4, the Israelites depend on the magic Ark to protect them from the Philistines, but neither they nor Eli’s sons have repented of their sins. Psalm 78:60

  • 7:16 “do not pray for these people” - their problem is not Nebuchadezar, but their own in His face rebellion against God. The New Testament also indicates that deliberate, grave sin with full knowledge is not helped by prayer. 1 John 5:16

  • 7:18 whole families participate in the idolatry - like the family of Achan Joshua 7:16-26

  • 7:21 “eat the meat yourselves” - your burnt offerings (which were to be wholly consumed by fire) are not sincere, so you might as well just have a BBQ.

  • 7:22,23 “not merely … sacrifices” - to obey is better than sacrifice. 1 Samuel 15:22

  • 7:27 “they will not listen” - not a fun job for Jeremiah.

  • 7:28 “would not receive correction” - there is a remedy for sin, but unrepentance leads to death.

  • 7:32 “valley of Slaughter” - their bodies stacked unburied where they had sacrificed their children to Molech.
