No Cure for Unrepentance
- 8:1 “scatter the bones” -
Ezekiel 6:3-5
- 8:3 “death shall be chosen” - not only the extent of their misery,
but they continue to chose death in deliberate disobedience to the
explicit word of the Lord.
Jeremiah 42-43
- 8:7 “do not know the judgements of the Lord” - the birds know the seasons,
but the people don’t even rise to the level of bird brains.
- 8:9 “what wisdom do they really have” - this can be written over all
modern wisdom that rejects the word of the Lord.
- 8:10 “fields to new owners” -
Jeremiah 39:10
- 8:11 “peace, peace” - the message of the false prophets
- 8:14 “Let us flee” - Jeremiah sees a vision of the future invasion.
- 8:17 “I will send vipers” - they can flee to the fortified cities, but
there is no refuge there from God’s wrath.
- 8:18 “sorrow is beyond healing” - Jeremiah is devastated by the vision
- 8:19 “Is the Lord no longer in Zion?” - yes, but they provoked Him to
anger with their idolatry.
- 8:20 A Middle East farmer’s expression of the ultimate disaster. Failure
of the early harvest meant tough times. Failure of both early and late
was disaster.
- 8:21 “horror has gripped me” - Jeremiah is in shock.
- 8:22 “Balm in Gilead” - we have a Balm of Gilead, the Blood of Christ,
and Christ is our Great Physician. But we must confess our sin.
