Conspiracy

The Conspiracy against the Covenant

  • 11:2 “this Covenant” - Jeremiah apparently had a copy in his hands, placing this after the lost books of the Covenant were found while repairing the Temple. Deuteronomy 27:14-26
  • 11:7 “again and again” - we see much repetition in Jeremiah, but also from other prophets over five centuries. The Lord is slow to anger. Psalm 103:8
  • 11:9 “there is a conspiracy” - God is a conspiracy theorist.
  • 11:10 “returned to the sins” - Josiah read the Law in their presence, and many wept. But most secretly planned to continue in sin despite the efforts of the King.
  • 11:15 “so many evil schemes” - despite a godly King, Baal worship was so addictive, they contrived to do it while still claiming the protection of Jehovah. “then you rejoice” - rejoicing in their evil, thinking they could have it both ways.
  • 11:16 “set it on fire” - as a farmer might burn a diseased tree. “With a mighty roar” - like a modern flame thrower.

The Conspiracy against Jeremiah

  • 11:18 “You showed me their deeds” - Jeremiah had no idea of the hit job until God showed him, likely in a vision like the prophetic visions.
  • 11:19 “that his name be not remembered” -
  • 11:21 “you must not prophesy or you will die” - by Arkancide. Jeremiah’s message was spoiling the narrative. “people of Anathoth” - Jeremiah’s hometown, a Levitical city, political leaders as well as priests.
  • 11:23 “no remnant” - the leaders of this conspiracy would be completely destroyed, with no descendants.
