The Dream of Israel Redeemed

Jeremiah 31:1-25

  • 31:1 “At that time” - “the latter days” of 29:24. “The God of all the families of Israel” - or as Paul confirms, “all Israel will be saved.” Romans 11:26
  • 31:3 “I have loved you with an everlasting love” - Psalm 25:6
  • 31:6 “watchmen will cry, Come! Let us go up to Zion!” - no longer will the watchmen be looking out for enemies, but to spot pilgrims to Zion and shout encouragement.
  • 31:9 “they will come with weeping” - Zechariah 12:10
  • 31:15 “A voice is heard in Rama .. Rachel weeping for her children” - Matthew 2:18 This may also refer to Rachel herself, as she was a prophetess while giving birth. The Dark Story of Christmas
  • 31:19 “After I returned, I repented” - God can deal with sin. If we only repent, He restores us to Himself. “I was ashamed and humiliated” - “how could we have been so stupid?”
  • 31:20 “My heart yearns for him” - or bowels churn. This describes young love, and that is how God feels about Israel, and by application, every child of God. God is in love with you.
  • 31:22 “a woman will shelter a man” - what does this mean? David Guzik suggests that it may mean there will be such peace that women will do sentry for the city.
  • 31:23 “O righteous dwelling place, O holy mountain” - Jerusalem and even the temple were filled with corruption as we have seen in Jeremiah and Ezekiel. Today, the government of Israel is still filled with corruption. But then, in the latter days, it will be a righteous dwelling place.
  • 31:26 “at this I awoke” - Jeremiah saw and heard all this in a dream.
