The Glory of Israel Restored

Jeremiah 33

  • 33:1 “Jeremiah was still confined” - it was the worst of times: siege, famine, disease, death. It was the best of times as God revealed the glorious future of the nation undergoing such severe chastisement.
  • 33:3 “Call to Me, and I will answer” - this word given to Jeremiah, seems to be intended also not just for Israel, but for everyone who listens.
  • 33:4 “torn down for defense” - all but the richest of houses were built of stone, the most plentiful building material.
  • 33:5 “fill those places with the corpses” - the Chaldeans came to fight, but God Himself will strike down the idolatrous Jews.
  • 33:8 “cleanse them from all iniquity”
  • 33:9 “This city will bring me .. glory” - soli Deo gloria. Earlier, Judah was likened to a white sash to bring glory to God - but sin had made them filthy and good for nothing. Restored Israel will fulfill the promise of bringing glory to God.
  • 33:15 “a righteous Branch” - Messiah, son of David
  • 33:16 “the Lord Our Righteousness” - Jerusalem would no longer be a city filled with corruption, but a holy and righteous city.
  • 33:18 “present sacrifices” - many theologians struggle to explain the restoration of temple sacrifices.
  • 33:21 “with David My servant and with My ministers the Levites” - not only is the covenant with David for all time, but also the covenant with the Levites.
  • 33:24 “the Lord has rejected” - many had despaired, feeling God had rejected them. Yes, he had turned his back on them until they repent.
  • 33:26 “the descendents of Jacob and My servant David” - yes, there is a “spiritual Israel”, and gentiles are grafted in. But, the covenant with physical genetic Israel will continue as long as day night continue.
