Jeremiah 51 More Judgement on Babylon

  • 51:2 “to winnow her” - attempting to separate the wheat (taxpayers) from the chaff (elite).
  • 51:3 “or put on his armor” - the army was caught totally unprepared.
  • 51:11 “aroused the spirit of the kings of the Medes” - against
  • 51:20 “you are my war-club” - Nebuchadnezzar, and the Chaldean empire was used of God to bring judgement on the nations. But that did not make Babylon exempt from judgement herself.
  • 51:27 “prepare the nations against her” - just like the cruelty of of Assyria led to a successful rebellion, the corruption of Babylon motivated a successful rebellion led by Cyrus.
  • 51:28 “kings of the Medes” - announced 70 years beforehand.
  • 51:32 “marshes set on fire” - after diverting the Euphrates, the army of Cyrus set the dry reeds of the marshes on fire to prevent the escape of soldiers.
  • 51:39 “serve them a feast” - the feast of Belshazzar.
  • 51:41`“Sheshack” - code for Babylon as we saw previously.
  • 51:50 “do not linger” - after 70 years, they were comfortable there. But when judgement comes, it is time to leave. Do not linger like Lot and his family.
  • 51:57 “princes and wise men drunk” - just like when Babylon captured Ninevah. Daniel 5
  • 51:58 “Babylon’s thick walls will be leveled” - most of the wall is still standing, so this is about a future Babylon. Revelation 14:8
  • 51:59 “4th year of Zedekiah” - when Zedekiah went to Babylon for training as a vassal king under the Chaldeans. The downfall from the Medes was prophesied when Babylon was ascending.
  • 51:64 “sink and never rise again” - like the judgement on Judah given to Josiah, it could not be avoided. But as it was delayed for Josiah because of his sincere repentance, so it was delayed for Nebuchadnezzar because of his sincere repentance. Daniel 4
