Subject: [Apologetics] Apologetics Meeting Saturday at 7:30 PM

Dear Friends,

We're set for our next Apologetics Meeting this coming
Saturday, 21 August, at 7:30 PM at Marty Rothwell's
home, 5483 Braddock Ridge Drive in Centreville.

If you need directions, you can call Marty at (703)
266-1856.

I hope you can attend.

The format of the meeting will be a little unusual,
but it should be interesting and informative.

We will be having a debate on sola scriptura in which
each side, affirmative and negative, will switch sides
halfway through the evening.

The exact topic is: Resolved, Scripture is the highest
authority on all matters.

To start with, Stuart Gathman and I will be on the
affirmative with Marty and Jim Murphy on the negative.

Bret Bellamy will be the moderator, timer, judge, and
questioner.

It will go like this:

1st Affirmative--5 minutes
1st Negative--5 minutes
2nd Affirmative--5 minutes
2nd Negative--5 minutes
1st Negative--3 minutes
1st Affirmative--3 minutes
2nd Negative--3 minutes
2nd Affirmative--3 minutes
Questions from moderator to each side

Then, after this session, Marty and Jim will be on the
affirmative and Stuart and I will be on the negative
with the same format as the first session.

The purpose of this exercise is to develop a 360
degree understanding of the pros and cons of this
matter.

I debated in junior high, high school, and college.
The way this works is you change sides after each
preliminary round. Then, if you make the elimination
rounds, a coin flip determines which team is on the
affirmative and which is on the negative.

By arguing on both sides of a question, you can become
much more aware of the strengths and weaknesses of
each position. From an apologetics standpoint, it
should help us to hone our knowledge of the issue and
are understanding of how to better argue our position.

So, please come if you can.

At the end of the evening, there will be an
opportunity for everyone else to make whatever
comments they might have.

It should be a very stimulating evening.

Art
