Israel charges four with biblical archeology hoaxes

Jerusalem, Dec. 29 (CWNews.com) - Israeli authorities
have charged four antiquities dealers with
perpetrating some of the biggest archeological hoaxes
in recent years, including the supposed ossuary of the
Apostle James and what they claimed was the only
surviving relic of King Solomon's Temple.

The ossuary is a box used in antiquity that held the
bones of the deceased after decomposition. The box,
purchased by an Israeli collector in the 1970s,
contained an inscription that said, "James, son of
Joseph, brother of Jesus," but last year the Israeli
Antiquities Authority confirmed that the inscription
on the box had been faked. The ossuary had received
international attention last year when it's owner
began showing to scholars and potential buyers. Had it
been real, it would have been the earliest
archeological reference to Jesus by name.
