S. AFRICA.: PASSING OF ABORTION AMENDMENT BILL CELEBRATED IN PARLIAMENT
Yesterday, 11 November 04, ANC parliamentarians danced and sang at the
passing of the new law to allow nurses to kill babies. This was a strange
display of emotion, given firstly that parliamentarians do not dance and
sing at the passing of any other law and secondly the government's claim
that this was just a minor technical change which was not worthy of a
debate. The government refused to debate the law either in parliament or in
the media despite repeated calls for debate from other political parties.
ChristianView Network challenged the ruling party to debate this law two
months ago on any radio or TV station - and even offered a R2000 reward for
anyone who could find a ruling party parliamentarian willing to defend it in
debate. They answered that they did not need to debate it since the issue
had already been debated in 1996 and these were just minor changes.
Nevertheless, ChristianView Network asks why the big celebration if this was
an unimportant technical legal change? Surely, they are afraid to defend it
in public - knowing most South Africans don't want it.
The law still needs to be signed by President Mbeki. Please email him and
ask him not so sign it:
