Our good friend, Jim Murphy, departed Northern
Virginia on Wednesday for Suwanee, Georgia.
I know all of us join in praying in for Jim in his new
home. We will greatly miss him.
Jim had intended to be here a while longer, but
circumstances required him to leave sooner than
expected. I had really wanted us to have a meeting
with him before he left, but it did not happen.
However, Jim will be back here for a few days in June
and has promised to let us know when he is coming so
that we can get together with him.
In the meantime, he said he would let me know his
address, e-mail, and phone number as soon as he can.
I'll pass along this information to all of you so that
we can all stay in touch with him.
Before he left, I asked Jim about the allegations that
Bret discovered about the Arlington Diocese.
I recall something being in the newspaper a couple of
years ago. Bishop Loverde responded to all of this in
a letter than was included in the bulletins of each
parish.
Jim said that he had actually looked up and read the
90 page affidavit of one the priest who had made these
charges. Jim said he was NOT impressed with the
information in the affidavit and doubted its accuracy!
He pointed out that the Diocese of Arlington is one of
the best in the country.
Bret, if you'd like to ask Father O'Brien what he
knows about this situation, I'm sure he will tell you
the truth, whatever that might be.
Marty, you might talk to Father Fasano. However, Jim
said that Father Fasano was also mentioned unfavorably
in the affidavit.
But without having done the research that Jim has, my
own reaction is to be highly suspicious of sensational
charges. I think some folks have agendas that are
different from the mission of the Catholic Church.
The Devil definitely tries to get people out of the
Church. It doesn't matter whether he uses the door on
the left or the one on the right. He just wants to try
to get as many as possible to lose their faith for
different, and frequently conflicting, reasons.
When you talk with Father O'Brien and Father Fasano,
if you'd like to share with us whatever public
comments they might have, I think we'd certainly be
interested.
