The Catholic Church is right. The law in Florida is horribly unjust.
The law clearly states that a legal guardian can put their charge to death
- provided only that they have been found beyond a reasonable doubt to be
in a Permanent Vegetative State. While the Schindlers have made valiant
efforts to raise doubts about Terri's status, we will never be absolutely
certain of a PVS diagnosis. The theory behind killing PVS patients may be
ok (that the person is absent from the body), but there will always be the
possibility that the person is still alive and aware, but unable to
communicate.
Withholding food and water from someone when that is all they require is
always wrong. But Judge Greer is right. The best way to get rid of a bad
law is to enforce it rigorously. Michael clearly has the legal right in
Florida to murder his wife. Does your state have laws allowing legal
guardians to murder their disabled charges?
Don't get me wrong. I believe Judge Greer's intentions are evil, or he
would not have struck down the addition to Florida's PVS law (Terri's law).
The best thing that could come from Terri's death is for the Florida
Legislature to repeal its PVS law, and go back to only allowing pulling the
plug on patients who are actually braindead and on life support. The Judge is
going to look pretty silly/evil claiming that repealing a law is
"unconstitutional".
I wish for all our sakes, they had done this 2 years ago, instead of
attempting to extend the Governors veto power to executions of the
innocent.
