Vandals have caused extensive damage to a street named
in honor of John Paul II in the western Ukrainian city
of Lviv, Itar-Tass news agency reported.

On Thursday night unknown persons uprooted at least
300 young trees that were planted on the day of the
pontiff’s funeral, April 7. The line of trees were
situated near the Catholic church where in 2001 the
Pope held a meeting with youths during his visit to
Ukraine.

A criminal case into the act of vandalism has already
been launched, local police said.

About two million of Ukraine’s 47 million population
are Catholics, and most of them live in the western
part of the country, particularly in the city Lviv
that has traditionally presented itself as a community
closer to the West than to the former Soviet states.
