Code release is challenge for catechesis, Italian
cardinal says

May. 16 (CWNews.com) - The president of the Italian
bishops' conference argues that the release of The Da
Vinci Code offers an opportunity for some serious
public instruction about the faith and the nature of
the Church.

Cardinal Camillo Ruini, speaking at the opening of the
Italian bishops' meeting, said that the movie's
release provides "the occasion for a profound work of
catechesis." He observed that while The Da Vinci Code
has been a spectacular commercial success, it
simultaneously has offered a challenge to Church
teachings on pivotal issues such as the origin and
development of the Church.

The effect of Dan Brown's novel has been damaging,
Cardinal Ruini conceded. But he warned against a
pessimistic attitude. The Italian people feel a
spiritual need, he reasoned, and the Church can
fulfill that need with proper instruction.
