Interestingly, the news release refers to "altar
servers," a phrase that replaced "altar boys" when
girls were allowed to serve at the altar.
I wonder if this Tridentine Mass will incorporate some
aspects of the post-Conciliar liturgy into it, such
as:
Receiving communion standing up, rather than kneeling,
and in the hand, not the tongue
Extraordinary ministers of the Eucharist (Do the EWTN
Masses have any Eucharistic ministers now?)
Lectors (probably not, since the news release referred
to deacons and sub-deacons)
Shaking hands during Mass (probably not, but it is
possible)
Instead of saying "The Body of Christ" to each
communicant, with the person replying "Amen," (which
was the way it was done in the early Church!) saying
to each commuicant, "Corpus Domini nostri Jesu Christi
custodiat animam tuam in vitam aeternam. Amen," with
the person relying nothing.
The first sentence of the news release states, "For
the first time in its 26 year history, Mother
Angelicas Eternal Word Television Network (EWTN) will
be broadcasting a live Solemn High Mass..."
Well, EWTN could have telecast a Tridentine Mass any
time it wanted, since most dioceses have them. Maybe
what they meant was a Tridentine High Mass, which may
have been a lot harder to find. But they could have
easily telecast a Tridentine Low Mass.
Another thing: Watching this in Latin on TV will be
mystifying to almost everyone who does not have a
missal with Latin on one side of the page and the
English translation on the other.
Even if someone happened to be a Latin scholar, the
Mass will be very confusing, since the priest recites
many of the prayers in a deliberately low voice, which
would not be audible on TV (unless he has a wireless
lapel microphone on his vestments--an innovation
unheard of at the time the Tridentine Mass was
celebrated.)
I don't know if I will watch this on EWTN, but if
someone does, I would appreciate a report to the Group
on their observations.
