Conservative Anglicans officially break with Episcopal Church USA
December 04, 2008
“We’re going through Reformation times," said Episcopalian Bishop
Robert Duncan, explaining the decision by a group of conservative
Anglicans to set up a new leadership structure, to be known as the
Anglican Church in North America, separate from the Episcopal Church.
The new group, which Duncan will lead, claims the allegiance of 100,000
people, and will seek recognition from other Anglican primates around
the world. It is not clear whether the group will ask for recognition
by the Archbishop of Canterbury. A spokesman for the Episcopal Church
expressed regret at the break, saying: "There is room within the
Episcopal Church for people of different views." That statement,
ironically, confirmed the conservatives' complaint that the Episcopal
leadership no longer adheres to traditional Christian teachings.
