[Apologetics] Fw: CWNews: Archbishop Wuerl responds to criticism

Hi

Based on his reasoning, were those politicians to go to Rome, the Pope should not interfere if they took communion there.

He's got a point - their own bishops should be instructing them. But it was his diocese, and he has to supervise what happens there. Both sides failed to control the politicians. Both sides had that responsibility.

The American bishops must take responsibility. The English are complaining that theirs don't. Ours - I don't know.

"As I've argued repeatedly, anybody who has read and internalized Ut Unum Sint could not be surprised when the Pope with the most Eastern conception of the papacy in a thousand years did not regard it as his role to micromanage the American Church." - Mark Shea, http://www.markshea.blogspot.com/2008_04_01_archive.html#2546724019658746724 [on a different issue]

On the other hand, bishops are not omnipresent, and can't be expected to sit down with every possible person and discuss whether they do this or that.

God bless,
Stephen

It appears Archbishop Wuerl read my comment about him at

        http://www.cwnews.com/news/viewstory.cfm?recnum=58113

        in Catholic World News.

Maybe it was read at the Vatican too.

Are you persuaded by Archbishop Wuerl's argument that he should not make decisions about barring pro-abortion politicians from Communion-- that the decisions should be made by bishops in the politicians' home dioceses? We've already had a large number of Sound Off comments on that subject; care to join the discussion?

And before I let you go for the weekend, here's just a quick reminder about another discussion, on my new book, which you can find on the Faithful Departed blog.
