Dear Loyal Pro-Lifers,
National Right to Life PAC today unveiled a new web ad on its YouTube channel, that puts a spotlight on the leading role that Barack Obama played, while a member of the Illinois state Senate, in voting against and killing legislation to provide care and protection for babies who are born alive after abortions.
Since he first ran for the U.S. Senate in 2004, Obama had claimed that the Born-Alive Infants Protection Act (BAIPA) that he opposed in the Illinois state Senate from 2001-2003 was very different from a federal bill with the same name that passed the U.S. Congress without a single dissenting vote in 2002. But on August 11, 2008, the National Right to Life Committee (NRLC) released recently uncovered documents that proved that Obama had actually presided over a committee meeting on March 13, 2003, at which Obama voted against and killed a state BAIPA that was virtually identical to the federal law.
On August 16, a journalist asked Obama about the NRLC charges during a televised interview; Obama said three times that NRLC was "lying." The interview subsequently broadcast many times.
However, journalists who closely examined the documents discovered that NRLC's statements were accurate. For example, a FactCheck.org investigation confirmed the authenticity of the documents that NRLC had released and concluded, "We find that, as the NRLC said in a recent statement, Obama voted in committee against the 2003 state bill that was nearly identical to the federal act he says he would have supported. . . . Obama's claim is wrong . . . The documents from NRLC support the group's claims that Obama is misrepresenting the contents of SB 1082 [the 2003 Illinois BAIPA]."
Our legislative director, Douglas Johnson, explained: "The position that Obama took was more extreme than any member of Congress was willing to take in 2002. Obama knows that the position he took in Illinois is virtually impossible to defend, so he has engaged in a series of serious distortions and diversionary tactics, including personal attacks on those who delve into this issue."
Barack Obama's campaign has one goal on this issue: to obscure his true record. Obama knew he was voting against a bill that would have made it clear that every live-born baby was a legally protected person for as long as he or she lived.
Johnson and NRLC Legislative Counsel Susan Muskett have coauthored a "White Paper," released by NRLC on August 28, that presents each of the major pieces of misinformation disseminated by Obama and his agents to obscure his true record on the born-alive infants issue. The paper is titled, "Barack Obama’s Actions and Shifting Claims on the Protection of Born-Alive Aborted Infants – and What They Tell Us About His Thinking on Abortion." NRLC has also made available, on its website, an archive of primary documents on various aspects of the issue.
