It is ironic that the Reformation Bookstore is promoting a book which teaches theology from the early fathers of the Catholic Church.  Of course, John Henry Cardinal Newman said it well:  "To be deep in history is to cease to be Protestant."

Learning Theology with the Church Fathers
by Christopher A. Hall

The early church fathers were great theologians—though they did not think of themselves as such. They were working pastors, involved in the daily life and leadership of their congregations. Yet they were wrestling with many of the great and formative questions of the Christian faith, such as the Trinity, the incarnation, the providence of God and the nature of the church. These beliefs were defined in the crucible of spiritual leadership, pastoral care and theological conflict, all set against the background of the great cultural movements and events of their day. For the church fathers, theology was a spiritual exercise woven into the texture of life.
What would it be like to sit under the preaching and instruction of these great men, to look over their shoulders as they thought and wrote, or to hear them debate theological issues?
Learning Theology with the Church Fathers offers us that experience. With the insight and love of a great teacher himself, Christopher Hill introduces his readers to the mysterious world of the patristic fathers. Due to an almost universal ignorance of the fathers, the issues that they were debating and discussing nearly 2000 years ago are the same issues the church is wrestling with today. Protestants are especially guilty of neglecting the theological thought and writings of the early church, but if Hill has his way, this neglect may be short-lived. Focusing on the great questions, he helps the reader to view the issues of the early church in their settings and find greater appreciation for the foundations and architecture of our Christian faith.  Paperback; 308 pages

For You They Signed
by Marilyn Boyer

It has been said that "leaders are made, not born." If this is true (and I think it is), 56 outstanding leaders were made in the fertile colonial soil of early America. When the Second Continental Congress passed "Lee's Resolution" in July 1776, 56 men put their lives on the line by signing their names to the bottom of the official document giving approval to the Resolution: The Declaration of Independence. The sacrifice, dedication, and bravery of these men is the foundation of the freedom that all Americans still enjoy today. But what is really known of these men? Other than Thomas Jefferson and Benjamin Franklin, how many of these 56 patriots can you name?

I must admit, these questions never really entered my mind until I met Marilyn Boyer and her husband in Boston over the July 4th weekend. Marilyn was excited about her new book, For You They Signed, and she thought that I should be too. When she handed me a copy of the book, I was initially impressed by its look and feel, but less than enthused about the topic. "Oh great," I thought sarcastically, "another book about America's Christian history. We definitely don't have enough of those!" My skeptical mind was only half-interested until Marilyn began describing what made her book different. As she talked, her passion about the topic became evident. As I opened the book and took a look inside, I was confronted by a well-designed, well-crafted historical treasure. Marilyn explained that her motivation for writing the book was due to realizing her own ignorance of the lives and individual histories represented by the 56 signatures on the Declaration. By the
time that we parted ways, I was convinced that this was indeed a book that was needed—much needed. In our current crisis in America, where the entire country is desperately waiting for a leader to show the way, For You They Signed shines the light backward, through the dark and dimly lit past of 250 years ago to show examples of the type of men that we need today. One leader is not enough, but 56 is a pretty good start...   CONTINUE READING THIS REVIEW

The Reduction of Christianity
by Gary DeMar and Peter J. Leithart

Christianity has been reduced. The modern American conception of Christianity is quite different from that of our Pilgrim forefathers 400 years ago. They came to this land in order to express their faith and live it out. Today, we are told to keep our faith within the four walls of the church building. And most Christians are obediently doing this very thing. We have become content with being an ignored minority; happy to be afflicted with the paralyzing disease known as Elijah's Syndrome ("Woe is me, I alone am left and they seek to take my life away," 1 Kings 19:9-18). If Christians really desire to be salt and light—to really get out in the middle of a pagan culture that is running headlong towards Vanity-Fair—they need to have a gameplan. Most popular Christian authors in the 21st century are only reinforcing the Elijah Syndrome, so we need to consult a couple of less popular authors from the 20th century if we hope to find a cure. Gary DeMar and
Peter Leithart wrote The Reduction of Christianity in response to spiritual and cultural lethargy in the 1980s. Their book is no less relevant today. In fact, it may even be more relevant for our own age where the church only seems to be getting more and more comfortable in their holy dens of hibernation.

One of the authors, Gary DeMar, had this to say recently about the book:

There was a time when we couldn't keep The Reduction of Christianity in print. I was doing several interviews each day with Christian and secular radio stations. I debated one of the country's most popular Christian writers several times. A standing-room-only debate took place in Dallas, Texas. The Reduction of Christianity was the hottest Christian book because it answered the objections of some prominent Christian writers who believed in cultural surrender. I have to say that The Reduction of Christianity is one of the most important books I have ever written. It is the antidote to many of the ills that have sickened the Church of Jesus Christ, in particular, indifference to cultural decline and the belief that this world is owned and controlled by the forces of evil and Christians can't do anything to change it.

The Reduction of Christianity helped Christians turn the corner on cultural and political apathy, and its principles are still driving liberals crazy. (I have the books in my library to prove it.) You'll understand why after you read this 400-page book. Nothing like it has ever been written, and its arguments have never been answered. The chapters on the kingdom, written by Peter Leithart, will turn your world upside down.

The fact that the demand for The Reduction of Christianity is not what it once was is an indication of how much it is needed today. This book, as DeMar promises, will turn your world upside down. But it will also enable you to then turn the rest of the world upside down, like the apostles and early disciples did (Acts 17:6). And after all, isn't this what Christianity is supposed to be doing in the first place?
