Highlighting the Risks
of Proposed Healthcare Reforms

Are you one of those people who have a candy dish on your desk or are you a candy-dish grazer? In his Stoplight® commentary, Stuart Shepard compares candy-dish principles to public-policy reality. Watch this week's Stoplight >

Focus Action Update™ and Turn Signal™ also discuss how the proposed healthcare reforms affect your family.

Help protect taxpayer dollars from funding abortions!

Dear Friend,
Congress will soon be deciding whether or not your money will be used to pay for abortions in federally mandated healthcare. Right now, the House and Senate are each considering healthcare reform bills that--in their current form--will include abortion coverage funded or subsidized by your tax dollars. Your help is needed to make sure that Congress excludes abortion and abortion funding from the healthcare reform bills.
While President Obama has repeatedly said that he wants to reduce the number of abortions, this healthcare reform plan would actually lead to government mandates for abortion coverage, dramatically increasing the number of taxpayer-funded abortions. Sadly, all attempts so far to exclude abortion and include conscience protections for medical professionals who do not want to provide abortions have been defeated in committee by Democrats, despite the fact that two recent polls show that between 63 and 71 percent of Americans favor laws that prevent taxpayer funds from being used for abortions.
Research also tells us that when abortions are publicly funded, the number of abortions go up. But when public funding is reduced or is not available at all, there are fewer abortions. In addition to increasing abortions, current healthcare reform plans will force Americans--including those with deeply held religious beliefs about protecting preborn human life--to pay for abortions.
One thing most Americans agree on is that there should be fewer abortions, but by passing the President's healthcare reform plan without specifically excluding abortion, Congress will be opening the door to more abortions.
Carrie Gordon Earll, senior director of issue analysis at Focus on the Family Action™, said it's crucial for Congress to exclude abortion and abortion funding from the healthcare reform bills.
"Current healthcare plans will force taxpayers to fund abortion, employers to include abortion in healthcare coverage and doctors to carry out abortions," Earll warned. "Do you want your tax dollars to fund abortions? If not, please make your voice heard in support of preborn life now."
Take Action

Please call your U.S. representative and ask him or her to specifically exclude abortion from the healthcare reform plan, as well as include specific protections for healthcare providers' rights of conscience. Contact information for your representative is available in our Action Center.

Thank you in advance for speaking up for those who cannot make their voices heard.
