Obama announces funding of ESC research on anniversary of Dred Scott

In a malignant act marked by cruel irony, President Obama announced on the 152nd anniversary of the Dred Scott decision legalizing slavery that he will lift President George W. Bush's ban on tax funding of embryonic stem cell research.  Below you will find a number of articles from LifeNews.com describing the life-and-death events of this week.

President Barack Obama to Force Funding of Embryonic Stem Cell Research
Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) -- President Barack Obama will sign an executive order on Monday that will force taxpayers to fund destructive embryonic stem cell research. Obama had been expected to sign such an order soon after taking over the White House even though the research involves the destruction of human life. In August 2001, President Bush put forth a policy preventing federal funding of any new embryonic stem cell research because it involves the destruction of human life. Instead, he put hundreds of millions of dollars behind studies conducted with adult stem cells, the only kind that has proven effective in helping patients with a variety of diseases and medical conditions. Obama campaigned on the promise of reversing the Bush policy but made some early indications he would rely on Congress to overturn the limits. Now, Obama will sign an order to lift the limits during a White House ceremony on Monday and he will let the National Institutes
of Health work out the details of how embryonic stem cell research will be funded. Obama administration officials have been tight-lipped about what the executive order will contain but an email the Washington Post obtained spelled out that the event would cover "stem cells and restoring scientific integrity to the government process" -- the common Obama attack phrase against the Bush provisions. Expecting the executive order, National Institutes of Health officials indicated last month that they had already started working on the paperwork necessary to begin funneling public funds to projects involving the use of embryonic stem cells. Anniversary of Dred Scott Reminds Pro-Life Advocate Abortion Targets Blacks
Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) -- Today is the anniversary of the infamous Dred Scott decision and one leading African-American pro-life advocate tells LifeNews.com that she is reminded of how some black Americans aren't considered persons today. Day Gardner, president of the National Black Pro-Life Union, notes the irony of the connection between race and abortion. "One hundred and fifty seven years ago today, Dred Scott, a black slave, petitioned the Supreme Court for his freedom, but was denied," Gardner recounts. "In the case known as the Dred Scott decision, the Supreme Court ruled that slaves--even freed slaves, and all their descendants, had no rights protected by the Constitution and that states had no right to abolish slavery." "The reasoning in Dred Scott and Roe v. Wade is nearly identical," she explains. "In both cases the Court stripped all rights from a class of human beings and reduced them to nothing more than the property of others,"
Gardner says. Full story at LifeNews.com

In August 2001, President Bush put forth a policy preventing federal funding of any new embryonic stem cell research because it involves the destruction of human life. Obama Takes Next Step to Scrap Protections for Pro-Life Doctors on Abortion
Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) -- President Barack Obama has taken the next step to remove the new protections the Bush administration put in place to protect pro-life medical centers and staff who do not want to do abortions. The protections provided better enforcement for existing conscience laws for medical professionals. The Bush administration put the protections in place after learning that medical centers and staff were facing increasing pressure to be involved in abortions despite three federal laws prohibiting such discrimination. Obama officials had told media outlets that the president wanted to merely clarify the existing rules, but, today, the administration published in the Federal Register a proposal to rescind the pro-life protections entirely. "The Department is proposing to rescind in its entirety the final rule," Obama HHS officials wrote in the proposal. The Obama administration appears to be relying on the objections pro-abortion
groups posed to the abortion conscience clause and it refers to those objections from groups like Planned Parenthood in its proposal. Abortion advocates "asserted that the rule would limit access to patient care and raised concerns that individuals could be denied access to services, with effects felt disproportionately by those in rural areas or otherwise underserved," the Obama administration noted. Radical Pro-Abortion FOCA Bill Coming Soon, Pro-Life Advocates Must Prepare
Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) -- Leading pro-life advocates have been criticized by the mainstream media for organizing an active opposition to the radical Freedom of Choice Act because the bill has yet to be filed in Congress. However, a leading pro-abortion Congressman calls FOCA a top priority and says the bill is coming soon. A spokesman for Rep. Jerrold Nadler, a New York Democrat who is chairman of a House Judiciary subcommittee that could consider the bill, says the bill is forthcoming. FOCA "is among the congressman's priorities. We expect to reintroduce it sooner rather than later," Ilan Kayatsky told the St. Louis Post Dispatch. "We expect it to be more or less the same bill with some minor tweaks," Kayatsky said. He indicated he expects pro-abortion Sen. Barbara Boxer to introduce a companion bill shortly. If the bill is introduced in roughly the same form as it has been in previous Congressional sessions, then pro-life advocates will be
preparing to vigorously oppose it. Douglas Johnson, the legislative director for National Right to Life, says his group would "continue to work to heighten the barriers to the FOCA, no matter when it is re-introduced." Full story at LifeNews.com
Pro-Life Groups: Obama Funding Embryonic Stem Cell Research Ignores Science
Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) -- President Barack Obama liked to bash President Bush during the presidential election for claiming that he was ignoring science. But pro-life groups say Obama's expected decision on Monday to fund embryonic stem cell research ignores science and they say it has yet to help patients. As LifeNews.com reported, Obama is expected to sign an executive order on Monday that would overturn the limits President Bush put in place to prevent funding the science because it requires the destruction of human life. Tony Perkins of the Family Research Council tells LifeNews.com the Obama decision ignores that science is moving away from embryonic stem cell research and towards alternatives that are both morally and ethically stronger. "President Obama's policy change is especially troubling given the significant adult stem cell advances that are being used to treat patients now without harming or destroying human embryos," he said.
"Despite the significant advances using adult stem cells to treat patients, and new techniques to create stem cells from any patient, President Obama will choose to direct taxpayer's money to experiments that represent the poorest stem cell science," he added. Full story at LifeNews.com

Planned Parenthood Promotes Abortion at White House Health Care Summit
Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) -- With no pro-life groups invited to respond, the president of Planned Parenthood promoted abortion at a White House-sponsored health care summit on Thursday. Cecile Richards called for including access to abortion in any health care reform package President Barack Obama may put forward. As LifeNews.com reported, the Obama administration's health care summit included the nation's largest abortion business and several other groups that take a pro-abortion position. But no leading pro-life medical groups or top pro-life organizations were allowed to attend the health care event. Instead, Planned Parenthood's president pushed for universal health care coverage and better access to health care. However, she wants abortion included and that would likely come at a public cost to taxpayers. Richards wants abortion included as part of the mandatory coverage package that could also force health insurance companies to include
abortion in their plans. That would pass on abortion costs to all people who are insured under their health care plans. Full story at LifeNews.com
Senate to Vote Early Next Week on Amdt on Cutting Planned Parenthood Funds
Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) -- It appears the Senate will likely vote on a pro-life amendment to cut federal funding of Planned Parenthood early next week. The vote will likely occur on either Monday or Tuesday as the Senate continues its debate on the omnibus spending bill that also funds the nation's largest abortion business. Senate leaders today agreed to allow votes on several Republican-sponsored amendments to the omnibus spending bill next week. Among those is an amendment sponsored by pro-life Sen. David Vitter of Louisiana prevent taxpayers from having their money sent from the federal government to Planned Parenthood. While the money Planned Parenthood receives from Title X funds doesn't pay for abortions directly, Vitter says it still helps the abortion business. ACTION: Contact your members of the Senate and urge strong support for the Vitter amendment to cut off funding to Planned Parenthood. You can find contact information for any
senator at http://www.senate.gov/general/contact_information/senators_cfm.cfm/ Full story at LifeNews.com
Abortion Practitioner Faces September Trial for Killing Woman in Botched Abortion
Hyannis, MA (LifeNews.com) -- Abortion practitioner Rapin Osathanondh, who has been charged with manslaughter after killing one of his patients in a botched legal abortion, will face trial in September. Osathanondh did the abortion on 22-year-old Laura Smith, who died in September 2007 at his Women's Health Center abortion business. Osathanondh was indicted last July by a grand jury after an investigation by local police, state police and the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Medicine. Laura, who was adopted at the age of four from Honduras by her parents, was 13 weeks into the pregnancy when she had the abortion. Osathanondh reportedly sedated her and did not have another other staff members on site who had appropriate medical training to monitor Smith's vital signs during the abortion. Smith died shortly after the abortion, on September 13, 2007. Officials say Laura died from "cardiac pulmonary arrest during anesthesia during a voluntary
termination of pregnancy" -- known as an abortion. The September trial in Barnstable Superior Court is expected to last two weeks. Full story at LifeNews.com

Potential Barack Obama Surgeon General Nominee Sanjay Gupta Withdraws Name
Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) -- CNN medical reporter Sanjay Gupta, who has been mentioned for months as the possible Surgeon General nominee for Barack Obama, has withdrawn his name from consideration. Gupta took some positions on abortion-related issue that raised concerns for pro-life advocates. Gupta is a practicing neurosurgeon and considered a media celebrity of sorts for his role in reporting on medical matters for the massive cable news network. During an interview with CNN's "Larry King Live" on Thursday, Gupta indicated he would not be interested in the position. "This is more about my family and my surgical career," Gupta said about the reasons for taking his name out of consideration for the post. The CNN medical correspondent is a former special adviser to then-first lady Hillary Clinton and he has taken some pro-abortion positions on selected issues. Full story at LifeNews.com

Obama Criticized for Hiding Pro-Abortion, Stem Cell Decisions on Slow News Days
Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) -- President Barack is drawing criticism from pro-life advocates who say Barack Obama is unwilling to face the heat from the majority of Americans who are pro-life. Obama continued his policy of announcing pro-abortion and anti-life decisions late on a Friday, when news is slow. The old adage in the political world is that the worst time to make a major announcement is late on Friday because most people are beginning to enjoy their weekend and paying little attention to the news. That's what happened today when the Obama administration announced two major policy decisions -- one to overturn the limits on funding destructive embryonic stem cell research and another to public its proposal to scrap conscience protections for doctors and hospitals that don't want to do abortions. However, the moves haven't gone unnoticed. "It must be Friday night because word leaks of yet another deadly executive order by President Obama,"
Family Research Council president Tony Perkins said. Full story at LifeNews.com
Lawyer for Staffer Charged in Florida Botched Abortion Case Denies Charges
Miami, FL (LifeNews.com) -- A lawyer for the abortion center staff charged with the unlicensed practice of a health care related to a gruesome botched abortion case says his client is innocent. Meanwhile, an attorney for the woman who suffered from the failed abortion is moving ahead with her wrongful death lawsuit. Belkis Gonzalez was arrested on Tuesday and jailed on two felony counts related to the death of a baby, named Shanice, who was born alive after the botched abortion in the 2006 case. Gonzalez was charged with the unlicensed practice of a health care profession resulting in serious bodily injury, a second degree felony, and with tampering with or fabricating physical evidence, a third degree felony. If convicted of the charges, Gonzalez faces a minimum of one year in jail and a $1,000 fine. She could receive a maximum of 15 years in prison on the unlicensed medicine charge and five years for tampering with evidence. But Gonzalez's lawyer,
Alberto Milian, says the charges are bogus because pro-life groups asked local officials to bring them. "Undoubtedly, this is one of those kinds of cases where there's a special interest to try to push a prosecution," he said. "All I can tell you is we stand on our plea of not guilty, and we'll have to see what is being alleged." Gonzalez will appear in court to respond to the charges on March 24 and she is on probation currently and free on a $50,000 bond. Full story at LifeNews.com

Cardinal O'Malley Says Caritas Hospital Deal Will Not Result in Doing Abortions
Boston, MA (LifeNews.com) -- Cardinal Sean O'Malley is responding to criticism of a Catholic hospital in Boston that some say has agreed to go back on its pro-life policies in a merger that ultimately promotes abortion. Caritas Christi Health Care has been the talk of the pro-life community because of the potential merger fallout. Caritas has joined with Centene Corporation in a bid to provide government-subsidized health insurance in Massachusetts that would include coverage for abortion. The bid to provide state-subsidized health insurance would take place through the Commonwealth Care program. O'Malley said the joint venture would be a positive development as long as abortions are not done at the Caritas. In comment released by the archdiocese, he says he has received confirmation that abortions will not be done under the contract. "I want to confirm for the Catholic community and the wider interested public that Caritas Christi Health Care has
assured me that it will not be engaged in any procedures nor draw any benefits from any relationship which violate the Church's moral teaching," O'Malley said in a statement. Full story at LifeNews.com
Sarah Palin Criticized by Pro-Life Group For Latest Appointment to Supreme Court
Juneau, AK (LifeNews.com) -- Sarah Palin fired up pro-life advocates during the presidential campaign and has a consistent pro-life record as the governor of Alaska. However, she is earning a black mark from some pro-life advocates who are upset she placed a former Planned Parenthood board member on the state Supreme Court. Palin, on Wednesday, named Anchorage Superior Court Judge Morgan Christen as the second woman to serve on the state's highest court. Christen's application made no mention of the fact that she is a former board member of Planned Parenthood and served the pro-abortion group in the mid 1990s. nowing that information, Jim Minnery, the director of the Alaska Family Council, a pro-life group, asked Palin officials to inform her and ask her not to name Christen to the court. Minnery says he is not upset with Palin and says the fault lies with the Judicial Council for sending her no candidates that his group could really get behind. He says
Palin should have had the option of selecting the best person for the job rather than being limited to the choices the Council sent her. Full story at LifeNews.com
