intramural fight between two prominent liberals.  Both Andrew Sullivan
and Joshua Green despise Palin, but turned their fire on each other in

Just 34% of Maryland voters have a favorable opinion of Michael Steele,
Chairman of the Republican National Committee.  In 2002, Steele was

In new polls, Republicans lead in 6 of 10 races and are tied in one.  In
Florida, Republican Marco Rubio leads independent Charlie Crist and
Democrat Kendrick Meek in a 3-way race.

In a 5-4 decision, the U.S. Supreme Court reversed previous rulings by
the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals and a federal district court which had
decreed that the seven-foot cross in the Mojave Desert was
unconstitutional.  In 2001, the ACLU filed suit on behalf of a former
Mojave Preserve employee who claimed he was "offended" by the cross,
which was erected more than 70 years ago by World War I veterans.

In the majority opinion, Justice Anthony Kennedy wrote, "The goal of
avoiding governmental endorsement does not require eradication of all
religious symbols in the public realm.  The Constitution does not oblige
government to avoid any public acknowledgment of religion's role in
society."

The National Commander of the American Legion said the Court's decision
"finally restores common sense that will enable this symbol to stand
proudly as intended--a tribute to honor American soldiers who died in
World War I." The Chief Counsel for the Thomas More Law Center had
warned that this case was "part of the ACLU's national agenda to
incrementally remove every cross on public land."
