Thanks, David.
I knew Beck was a Mormon but did not realize he was a convert from
Catholicism.
Mormons have a totally different concept of God than do Christians (or
Jews or Muslims). Since Mormons have very little in common with
Christians, Beck should stick with political subjects.
I don't watch Beck very often, but one of the few times I did, he was
subtly criticizing the Council of Nicaea. I asked someone who watches
him a lot about this and was told he interweaves Mormonism into his
program from time to time. It may be that Beck's rally was actually an
attempt to evangelize on behalf of Mormonism. I'd have to look closely
at what he said to be sure, but I think that could have been his real
goal.

Interesting article for background.
Saturday morning I had my TV tuned to C-SPAN and the Glenn Beck revival
on the Mall, while I worked at my computer. I was mostly mystified at
what I was hearing. I couldn't figure out why a political rally had
turned into a religious revival--and then such an ineffective one at
that.
Before, I had watched Beck on TV exactly twice. The first time
convinced me that all of his circuits are not working. The second time
I said to myself, "Well, I can see why some people are drawn to
him--he's a pretty stirring speaker" (if that's all you are looking
for). This Saturday I just found him boring, at great length. I hear
stories that Tea Partiers left the show, silent and seemingly bored. I
can understand that. They had traveled at personal expense and
inconvenience, and put up with Washington's brutal August heat...for
what? A great political opportunity had been wasted.
From this article, I learned Beck is a Catholic-turned-Mormon. Well,
that explains part of the mystery for me. (POLITICAL INCORRECTNESS
ALERT:
STEREOTYPE AHEAD.) Catholics and Mormons just aren't good revivalists,
at least in a mixed crowd. You need a Baptist or Methodist...or
something more exotic...for that.
I do believe him when he says that when he originally asked for the
August
28 date at the Lincoln Memorial, he didn't realize it was the Martin
Luther King anniversary date. And of course the irony is that no
liberal civil rights group had reserved the Memorial for that date.
When enraged liberals started emoting, Beck...quite naturally...quickly
realized that this was God's Plan For Glenn Beck.
Boy, if you thought Glenn Beck was dangerous before, just because of
some missing circuits, he is REALLY dangerous now that he's a messenger
for God.
