Conservatives and the GOP:

NY Times computer projections from all the polls predict Republicans
will win control of the House, fall slightly short in the Senate, and
end up with 30 governors. Real Clear Politics sees the GOP with 49
senators and 31 governors.

The Washington Post's Dan Balz wonders if there are "glimmers of hope
for Democrats." While there have been signs of movement for the
Democrats, there have been other races where Republicans are doing
better.

The GOP may have lost ground in Alaska, California, Delaware, and
Kentucky. But some Republicans are doing much better in Colorado,
Connecticut, Florida, Ohio, West Virginia, and Wisconsin.

Benefits:

The House Veterans Affairs Committee (HVAC) will hear testimony that the
lifetime costs of medical care and benefits for war veterans could be at
least $1.3 Trillion. Congressman Bob Filner (D-CA), the Chairman of the
HVAC, wants to pass a "trust fund" to build up cash reserves to meet
these future costs.

But Congress has raided all of the other "trust funds" and used the
money for unrelated federal spending. The White House Office of
Management and Budget explains that the meaning of a "trust fund" in the
federal government is completely different from the meaning in the
private sector.

At the end of August 2010, the federal government had "borrowed" $2.593
Trillion from the Social Security Trust Fund to use on the general
operations of government with no idea how this can be paid back. If a
trust fund is established for veterans benefits, strong safeguards must
be written into the law to keep the money from being misused.

Values:

A new poll by the Pew Research Center's Forum on Religion and Public
Life has found that atheists and agnostics know more about religious
beliefs, practices, history, and leaders than do Christians or Jews. A
series of 32 test-like questions found that Catholics, Protestants, and
Jews displayed a surprising lack of knowledge of their own faiths.

45% of Catholics did not know what their church teaches about the Mass
and Holy Communion, while 53% of Protestants could not correctly
identify Martin Luther, who started the Reformation. However, this poll
included all persons who said they "identify with" each religious group,
rather than just those who actually practice that religion on a regular
basis.

Of all Americans, only 45% could name all four gospels in the New
Testament, but 63% knew that Genesis was the first book in the Old
Testament. 71% knew that Jesus was born in Bethlehem.
