|       Greetings!        I'd like to personally invite you to visit Rome and the Vatican with me in November, just after the October Synod on the Family -- which will run from October 4 to October 25 in Rome -- on a "working pilgrimage."        The October Synod will no doubt be historic. The world's press will descend on Rome to cover it as a titanic contest between "traditionalists" and "reformers." The cardinals, bishops and theologians will, for three weeks, seek both to defend the traditional family and to reach out in charity toward those in difficult, irregular and even sinful family situations. The "conservatives" are declaring that they will make a stand against any attempts to "water-down" Church teaching. The "liberals" are saying they will not accept any result which does not open the way to "new ways" to offer pastoral care to people in these situations. Thus the battle-lines are being drawn.         We know October will be a tumultuous, exciting, even epochal month in Church history -- perhaps the month which will determine the historical legacy of Pope Francis.        After it is over, there will be a moment of pause. A moment in November to think over what was said and done. A moment to reflect and gain greater clarity. A great time to be in Rome -- just after the Synod, just before the beginning of the Jubilee Year of Mercy...        I will be taking the month of November to prepare an account of what occurred in October. To do that, I will be visiting with bishops, theologians, canon lawyers and journalists, and then "retreat" to Assisi and Norcia, places I love.         I invite you to join me on this "working pilgrimage." You will come with me to a number of meetings and listen as we ask those who participated at the Synod to reflect first-hand on what they experienced: what the real issues were, who the truly influential Synod figures were, what the profound dynamics of the month-long gathering were.          We have had a considerable demand for a pilgrimage focusing on this Synod, which all of us are watching with great interest and concern. We decided to make this pilgrimage as accessible as possible and have substantially reduced the cost in the hope that those who have written to me and have not been able to join us in the past might be able to join us on this occasion.         Each of our Inside the Vatican Magazine Pilgrimages is planned to be peaceful and prayerful. This one will be no different. We will visit some special places, but our journey will be a "working pilgrimage," not ordinary tourism. The spiritual dimension, the search for a deeper understanding of our faith and of the history and life of the Church, will be central. The pace of the pilgrimage will be slow, not rushed, and there will be time to reflect and to pray.        There are only a few spaces left, so if you would like to come, let me know right away. Click here for more information.           Please consider joining me on this meditative, prayerful "Post-Synodal Working Pilgrimage" to the heart of the Church, close to Pope Benedict XVI and Pope Francis.
