Don't use Windows. Alternatives:

1) Use Apple Mac

2) if that is too expensive (or too unfamiliar), use Linux

3) if you can't get free Linux support sufficient to help you switch,
at least don't use the worst offenders in Windows: Outlook and IE.

3a) Use Thunderbird or other mail client (e.g. Netscape, Mozilla)
3b) Use Firebird or other web browser (e.g. Opera, Netscape, Mozilla)

4) (The Zen solution.) Use Windows with default applications, but don't
connect your computer to any other computers and don't use your computer
for any banking or financial applications, or anthing you want to keep.
Your computer will immediately be conscripted as a Zombie by the
underworld (mostly to distribute spam and porn), and gradually get slower as
its workload increases. When it gets too slow, reinstall Windows.
If your internet connection is dialup, you won't be making a significant
contribution to spam and porn distribution.
