Dear Gathnetters,
I am afraid that I have not been very faithful in my
writing of notes from Pilgrim Rest. Indeed, Anne and
I have been getting through each day as they come but
not much more. It may be because of the humidity
(quit unusual for San Diego) we have been having or
perhaps it is just age catching up on us. I could
spend the whole day and not get a thing worth while
done and still be exhausted at bed time. Part of the
problem is that I have a knee problem which hurts
quite a bit when I do much walking. Our Dr.
appointment was postponed about 3 weeks because of the
doctor's vacation schedule. Hopefully I will tell him
about it this coming Monday. Thus Anne has been doing
a lot of the running around caring for the plants etc.
We do have the weeds pretty well cleared about the
place at this time (the main reason for the knee
problem was when my 800# Dr bush-hog got away from me
while on a steep downward slope and with no brakes, I
was running along trying to get it into reverse (the
only way of stopping it) and twisted my knee pretty
severely.) I have been trying to keep my weight off
of the knee for the last 6 weeks but it really hasn't
healed yet. I hope there isn't anything major wrong
with it.
The major news from this end is:
1) Mindy and Elissa Gathman (the older of Stuart's
girls) are headed for a short term mission trip with
Truro to Honduras on 15 August. Please keep them in
your prayers as they seek to follow God's leading in
their lives.
2) Jim was selected for LDO (Limited duty Officer) in
the Navy's program to upgrade outstanding enlisted men
into the officer's corps.
3) It looks like a consequence of this promotion is
that the Hawaiian Gathmans may become San Diego
Gathmans for a while! Something that we would very
much enjoy!!!!
4) Jim is currently sailing around in the Indian Ocean
on the USS Paul Hamilton as a chief. He is in charge
of the physical fitness of the 300+ crew on board.
You could write to him while he is serving his country
at the email address above.
4) Jon has finished writing the music for a musical
being performed at their church at this time. I don't
know if Broadway is calling yet or not.
5) Kiefer, Anita's son, as a sophomore in H.S. took
successfully the national AP, advance placement,
Physics Test. We are of course very proud of him
especially as he upholds the standards of the home
school movement and that he was as student in my
physics lab at the home school consortium.
Thanks be to God. I am very thankful for my quiver
full of outstanding arrows and their offsprings. What
a blessing!
I had earlier sent an email about the homegoing of
gathnetter, Marilyn Arison. Marilyn is my first
cousin on my father's side. She died of cancer at the
end of June 2005. I didn't receive a copy of it so I
am assuming that it didn't get sent. Therefore I am
repeating it here as the poem written for Marilyn was
especially meaningful to me. I am sorry if you did
get a copy of this email but I didn't. It is worth
repeating anyway.
Jim Arison sent me the program from the memorial
service of Marilyn on July 8. One of her
friends wrote the following poem dedicated in loving
memory of Marilyn which as I was
looking over today I thought really ought to be shared
more widely among we believers. Perhaps
it is my age but at any rate this poem really hit me
this morning about our blessed hope. As we
see our world again in chaos and the anti-God mindset
so strong even in our "Christian" America,
we naturally think about our coming Messiah who will
actually rule fairly and wisely. I get really
anxious for His return!!!! (or my own home going)
I'm Coming Home
(In loving memory of Marilyn Arison)
Father, into Thy hands I commend my spirit.
I'm coming home, I'm coming home.
In my earthly life, You have given me much.
I have known the loving fellowship of the church,
the joy of friendship, and a family beyond compare.
I have loved the music that brings honor to Your
name;
it has been the delight of my soul.
Now the music of Heaven calls to me.
I will worship You as never before.
So now, I am coming home,
I'm coming to my eternal home
by Eleanor Whitsett
Love to you all from
der alte Grossvater.
