Dear Gathnetters,
We are indeed alive still. I don't know where this summer went but
time is passing very quickly these days. I thought I would try and
bring you up to date on where the San Diego Gathmans are and what we
are doing.
As you may know this summer, Ortal, our Israeli niece came for a
visit. It was a very pleasant time for all. We had a Sunday school
class where Ortal helped me explain something about Hebrew to our kids
and they learned about the language that most of the Bible was written
in. We did some sight seeing but her favorite pass time was riding in
her cousin, Jim's new Mustang convertible!
Yes, Jim and his family are now here in San Diego. Jim is commissioned
and is in charge of a squadron of surface effect landing craft. He is
stationed at Camp Pendleton which is about 70 minutes away. He and
Sue found a really nice rental house (belonging to an Admiral who is
spending two years in the DC area). They are living in a little town
close to the coast call Bonsall. The kids are enrolled in a charter
school, (Charter schools in California are schools run by the parents
but paid for by taxes.) They are a huge improvement over the standard
public school in California where the kids can't even read their diploma
when the are out of high school.
I am again teaching High School physics lab at the home school
consortium and am enjoying it as usual.
The McClatchey family is extremely busy as you can imagine. Anita is
teaching Biology Lab in the next room from mine. She has about three
times as many students as I have. Kiefer is hoping to go to Wheaton
College next year. He is taking some advanced math courses at our
local junior college. He is at least a semi finalist in the national
merit scholarship competition and as such receives about 10 invitations
from colleges a day in the mail. He still wants to go to Wheaton like
the rest of his family.
Beth is enjoying being with the little ones. She and Bethany have an
especially close relationship. She is a major help to Anita in helping
to keep the family going, fed etc.
Our health remains the same. My cancer is still in remission for which
I am very great full to God. Anne's heart is not like it use to be but
still she is enjoying puttering around the yard.
Well, I don't want to freak you out by writing too much for the first
time in such a long time. Fortunately today is election day and
nothing more can be said. I personally am so sick of telephone calls
that we haven't even answered the phone for the last several weeks. We
couldn't even listen to the radio with out being bombarded by the
politicians and their tasteless adds.
Love, to all
der Alt Grossvater
