Hey Everyone,
I thought you would be interested to know that Rachel's name made
it into _World_. Two summers ago the Shelby Kennedy Foundation started
a National Bible Bee in honor of a daughter who died of cancer. They
challenge school aged children 7-18 across the country to memorize LARGE
quantities of Bible verses and passages (Rachel as a senior level has
800 this year), and Bible knowledge over the summer. Then at the end of
the summer, they have a day of testing - a 1hour/200 question test on
knowledge and 10 minutes to recite 30 verses/passages /randomly/ chosen
with no more than 10 errors/verse or it does not count (Any one else
thinking BMA challenges?). Then they tally the scores and award prizes
at the local level (Rachel tied for second in our group), but they also
compare the scores with students across the nation in each of the 3 age
categories. Although hoping not, Rachel ended up in the top 100 scorers
putting her in the national finalist round - this is what is on a full
page spread in _World _- Look toward the end of the senior level. This
means she and I are going to Schaumberg, Ill on the 11th of November,
for more rounds of testing, reciting and if she does better than she
hopes may have to be on stage and recite in competition in front of lots
of people. There are some hefty top prizes in each category, but Rachel
mostly tackled it as a challenge to boost memorizing and does not really
want to be on stage again so we'll see. I think they are planning to
broadcast some of the events on the web site. She did not really want
to go to Nationals this year as we are constantly on the go with courses
and testing but decided to accept the challenge. I get to listen to her
perfect her verses, worry about how stressed she is, and to go and visit
Anna who is just about a half hour away and bring her for some of the
events. :-) . Keep her in your prayers - being a perfectionist, she is
carrying a pretty heavy load.
Anita
