Most every evening over the past several years, bore witness to a playful
war between Anna and Tad. The issue has to do with whether the family is
sitting down to "dinner" or "supper", and the shots fired are the inevitable
repetitions of "thank-you for DINNER Mommie" and "Yes, thank-you for SUPPER
Mommie". Those of us who have not taken "sides" simply grin at the sheer
persistence of these two, day after day, and in appreciation of the positive
means they have chosen to carry on their little war.
Those in the "supper" camp, call in their defense, on the dictionary
definition of the word which states that supper is the last meal of the day.
Tad loves to engage in debate and word and logic plays and took up the
challenge immediately. He also cites the dictionary definition in support
of his view. If you are sitting down to dinner, then clearly you haven't
eaten it yet, which makes any meal eaten earlier the last meal of the day,
but certainly not the current meal. Furthermore, should anyone have a snack
later, this meal would again no longer be the last. In fact, because this
term can in fact, be applied to any meal eaten during the day including
breakfast, it is therefore a generic term and thus is not the appropriate
term for use in a specific instance such as thanking Mom for a specific
meal. Finally Tad calls on Christian tradition in his defense. He points
out that Christians have for 2,000 years, maintained that "suppers" no
longer exist. . . ever since "The Last Supper".
