Dear Gathnetters,
Anne and I have just watched the movie "John Rabe" from netflix. I
thought it was a very emotional and inspiring movie about the true story
of Herr Rabe who was the manager of a large German firm, Siemanns in
Nanking, China in the 20s and 30s. This story takes place in December
1937 as the Japanese did the rape of Nanking and how Herr Rabe (being
"on the papers" a "nazi" although he didn't conform to Hitlers agenda
was able to use this connection to save over 200,000 Chinese people from
brutal killings by the Japanese. He formed a "Safety Zone" in which the
Japanese wouldn't bomb because they were allied with the German nazis at
the time. .... at any rate, we American Gathmans have some Rabe blood
in us. I don't know if there is any real relationship between us and
John Rabe but he had the principles that we Gathmans enjoy. See it if
you can!

Stu, der Altgrossvater
