I can look up web pages later, but there are inexpensive ($150)
microcontrollers, often programmable in java these days, to translate between 
RS232 and other low level control (AIO,DIO) and IP.  I've spent hours
dreaming of possible applications to try and justify the expense of
getting one to play with.
