Do you have Android 5 or later? If so, you can try this app by my
(Scuttlebutt) friend Andre Staltz to use the Secure Scuttlebutt
protocol. You'll need an SD card with at least 10G free to store the
"feeds" and "blobs" of the people you follow. My node (on my laptop)
is currently using 10G - but 7G of that is "blobs" (pictures and stuff)
which can be deleted and downloaded again later when referenced. Note
that blobs cannot be downloaded offline, obviously - and if you have
limited data on your phone, it is probably cheaper to buy a big SD card.

But the text is always available offline.

There is no server for Scuttlebutt. Copies of your data are stored on
the devices of people that "follow" you. There is no login or
password. Your identity is a public/private key pair stored on your
device, which is the only thing you need to backup to recover your
identity if you lose/break your phone (the data is stored on your
followers devices).

Unfortunately, my phone is Android 4.4.4 - so I can't try it out
(although I might be able to recompile it).

My Scuttlebutt id is
