Ah, you are using BSD.  I see in my FAQ that BSD unix domain sockets
are incompatible with libmilter.  You have to use an internet domain
socket.  The FAQ says that OpenBSD claims to have fixed this, but
it is worth a shot to switch to an inet socket.
