In the 17th century, coffee was imported to Europe from the Ottoman
empire. Many considered it the Devil's Drink.

Charles II of England banned coffee houses, and Pope Clement VIII
"baptized" coffee by rendering his verdict that it was OK for Christians
to drink it.
Bach weighed in on this controversy by writing a cantata dramatizing the
conflict. It is known as the KaffeeKantanten. A daughter has become a
coffee drinker, and dad is determined to break her of the habit. The
Aria: "Kaffee! Kaffee! Kaffee muss Ich haben!"
