Maniac Magee

book review by Elissa Gathman

Jeffrey Magee is 12 years old. His clothes are torn and dirty. His tennis shoes are flopsoled. In one hand he has a book. He is a very kindhearted, loving, and giving person. He's also a very calm person, especially in the face of a bully - and even a frog.

You see, it all began one day when Jeffrey (or Maniac, as people soon call him) was walking - running. Maniac always runs. He saw some boys playing baseball (or should I say, frogball), and there was a giant pitching - so big he had to bring his birth certificate to prove he was only 12. Well anyways, Maniac went right up and stood in the batter's place. He hit every ball the pitcher threw, then the pitcher left and came back with a ball. Or was it a ball? You'll see when you read the book.

Jeffrey Magee doesn't really have a home. That is one of his problems - he wants an address. He used to have an address at the east end of town, but that was his other problem. He thought he was giving the Beales trouble. What he didn't know was that they loved him too much to care.
