Shadowland: Redemption: Week 22
Exodus 23: Justice and Mercy
23:1 "Where were you on the night of ..."
Jezebel hires false witnesses:
1 Kings 21:9-11
23:2 Pilate caves to pressure from the crowd:
23:3,6 True Justice is blind. There must be no favoritism - for or against the poor.
23:4,5 "do good to those who hate you"
23:11 "that the poor may eat" - were the sabbath years synchronized like the sabbath day? Maybe not.
23:13 "Do not mention the name of other gods."
. This would seem to prohibit even joking references, like "By Jove!"
23:14 Three national celebrations
23:18 Yeast is a type of sin. This is the passover sacrifice, the only one yet instituted. By contrast, the Pentecost sacrifice must be leavened:
"Do not leave the fat until morning."
23:19 "Do not cook a kid in its mother's milk" - compare
23:20 "I am sending an angel ... my Name is in Him." Most commentators agree this is Christ - but the issue is hypothetical, as the promise was retracted after the golden calf incident.
23:21 "Do not rebel against Him"
1 Corinthians 10:9
23:33 "the worship of their gods will certainly be a snare to you" - Baal worship was essentially low-tech porn. The same warning applies today.
