35:2 The sabbath is a sign of the covenant.
Exodus 31:13
For an Israelite to break the sabbath was to break the covenant between Israel
and God.
Exodus 31:16
Work on even the holy tabernacle was not to take place on the sabbath.
While the sabbath was established at creation, the way in which Israel
was to observe it was unique, or it would not mark them as set apart.
Nehemiah 9:14
There is no such rigid observance defined for the Church.
Colossians 2:16
There is only the principle of setting apart the 7th day, following
the example of God in creation. However, we must be sensitive to the
conscience of fellow believers, neither offending nor condemning them.
Romans 14:6
Nine of the 10 commandments are reiterated in the New Testament in
various forms - emphasizing the heart attitude, as indeed did the
Old Testament prophets. The Sabbath, however, is confirmed as a
"rest", with Jesus saying "I will give you rest" and the writer to the
Hebrews saying, "anyone who enters God's rest also rests from their
works."
Hebrews 4:10
