Matthew 9:18-38: The Work of the Kingdom

• 9:19 "and his disciples with him" - Matthew is now a disciple.
• 9:21 "I will be healed" - future imperfect of sozo, save
• 9:22 "Jesus turned" - touching the fringe of his garment would send no perceptible material signal. Something supernatural had just happened. "healed" - perfect of sozo, save. The same word as in Matthew 1:21. This woman's faith was demonstrated by touching his garment, in contrast to the "faith" of James 2:24.

  "Blessed are they that mourn, for they shall be comforted." Sorrow is the handmaiden of joy. Mourning for loved ones will become a blessed reunion. The painful consequences of our sin and others sin helps us to let go of sins we cling to, that Jesus would put away. Hebrews 12:1, Luke 24:47

• 9:24 "Go away" - Jesus sends away the scoffers to help the faith of the father.
• 9:27 Matthew records 2 blind men, but this is a different incident from Matthew 20:29, where again Matthew records 2 blind men where Mark and Luke record 1. So you wonder if this is a pattern with Matthew.
• 9:29 He also helps the faith of the blind men by touching their eyes. "according to your faith it will be done to you" - this helps us understand "your faith has healed you".
• 9:30 Why does Jesus command them not to tell anyone?
• 9:31 Why do they disobey?
• 9:34 Jesus will address this in strong language in Matthew 12.
• 9:35 This is the work of the Kingdom.
• 9:36 This is the motivation.
• 9:37 Having just demonstrated the work of the Kingdom, Jesus will empower and commission the disciples to do the same in the next chapter.
