Jesus was entirely unlawful under both the Law of Moses and
the law of Rome. "from the chief priests and elders" -
the establishment was deeply corrupt.
- 26:64 "you have said it" - Jesus was giving Himself up of His
own will. He did not consent to be condemned by some
false accusation, but because He spoke the truth.
This also condemns his accusers - they knew the truth
and chose to act against it.
They did not have enough evidence to convict. Jesus
had to "condemn" Himself.
- 26:65 "rent his clothes" - the high priest was forbidden to tear
his garments.
Leviticus 21:10
The Talmud, of course, opines otherwise, making an exception
for hearing blasphemy firsthand.
