Papal preacher denounces Da Vinci Code
Vatican, Dec. 02 (CWNews.com) - The preacher to the
pontifical household criticized the novel The Da Vinci
Code, by American author Dan Brown, during a sermon
delivered to the leaders of the Roman Curia today.
Father Raniero Cantalamessa delivered the first in a
series of Advent meditations on December 2, with Pope
Benedict XVI (bio - news) among those attending, in
the Redemptoris Mater chapel. He will preach on each
Friday of Advent.
In his first Advent meditation, Father Cantalamessa
spoke about the state of Christian belief in the world
today. He challenged the Vatican officials in
attendance to make a "great act of faith" to overcome
the religious indifference that is growing throughout
the Western world.
In speaking about the popular approach to Christian
belief, the papal preacher denounced the "literary
parasitism" that exploits the Gospel to furnish
material for sensational works of fiction that
undermine the faith. The Da Vinci Code, he said, is
"the latest and most aggressive in a long series" of
such works.
