Stephen,
I've never compared any of the books of the Old
Testament, but in the New Testament, the King James
Version and the Douay Rheims Version are almost
identical.
The Douay Rheims New Testament was published in 1582
and the Old Testament was published in 1609. The King
James Version was published in 1611.
I believe the Rheims New Testament strongly influenced
the King James translators. However, the Douay Old
Testament was published much later and the King James
translators did not have enough time to study it.
I consider the King James New Testament and Rheims New
Testament to be the two best translations. The Revised
Standard Version, which is an updated version of the
King James Version, is next.
I'll have to look into Sirach.
To start with, it is listed as Apocrypha in the King
James Version, as it is not in the Jewish canon.
Accordingly, the translators who worked on this may
not have been their very best guys.
Sirach by that name is not listed in the Douay Rheims
Version. It is called Ecclesiasticus.
I've noticed some of the numbering in other Old
Testament books in Douay Rheims does not correspond
with other translations. I'll see how it matches up
here.
I'll let you know if I come up with something.
