Stephen,
As you say, the DR is translated from the Vulgate. It is very literal and therefore it tends to be less watered-down and the language is richer, although it can also be very wordy and more foreign to modern English.

Look at some of the different versions of Sirach 24 - see attached PDF file. I hear the KJV is similar to the NAB and RSV. The Douay is the only one that translates from the Vulgate. Any ideas as to the huge difference between KJV and the DRB/Vulgate?
