Vatican rebukes Israel for "groundless accusations"
Vatican, Jul. 29 (CWNews.com) - The Vatican has
strongly rebuked the Israeli government for making
"groundless accusations" against Pope Benedict XVI
(bio - news).
In a strongly worded statement released in the evening
of June 28, the Vatican press office again rejected
Israel's public criticism of the Pope for failing to
mention Israel during a July 24 public audience, when
he listed several other countries that had been
targets of suicide bombings in the past few days. The
Israeli foreign ministry charged that the Pope's
omission of Israel would engage terrorists.
The Vatican said that the injustice of those remarks
"cannot but be clear to the people who made them." The
"untenability" of the Israeli criticism was obvious,
since Pope Benedict has repeatedly and unconditionally
condemned all terrorist activity.
